Independence day

The end of the year is nearing and we will be off celebrating and holidaying with family and friends but before we do, we still have a couple of upcoming events at the Finnish Hall over the next few weeks.

This Sunday, on the 2nd of December, we celebrate our Independence by remembering those that bravely fought and through ‘sisu’ managed to maintain it through the many years.
The ceremony starts at 12 noon with a church service followed by celebrations.

Next weekend, on the 9th of December, is the Family Christmas Party. More details to come.

We are also going to be representing our Society at the Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar (svenskakyrkan.se/australien/melbourne/bazaar) – two days brimming with all things Christmas and Scandic, with an Aussie twist. Come and say hei! The Swedish church is also looking for volunteers to help with the bazaar, email christmasbazaarvolunteers@gmail.com if you are interested.

Joulumyyjäiset / Christmas Bazaar

Vuosittaiset suomalaiset joulumarkkinat ovat taas täällä! Suomi-talolla 24. marraskuuta (klo 10:00-13:00) järjestettävät markkinat ovat mainio paikka saada kotiin joulumieli ja pieni pala Suomea mukaasi. Tarjolla on kaikkea herkullisista leivonnaisista ja kotiruoasta käsitöihin ja muihin lahjaideoihin – kaikille löytyy varmasti jotain mieleistä.

Monet suomalaiset herkut menevät kaupaksi todella nopeasti, joten kannattaa saapua paikalle ajoissa, että ehtii ostamaan esimerkiksi karjalanpiirakoita, ruisleipää, korvapuusteja, laatikoita, kahvia, suklaata ja karkkeja – tai saavu paikalle hieman myöhemmin ja nauti rauhallisesta joulun tunnelmasta, ystävien tapaamisesta ja hyvästä kahvista.

Jos olemme kilttejä, joulupukki saapuu myös vierailulle, joten tuothan pienen lahjan lapsesi nimellä varustettuna joulupukin lahjasäkkiin.

The annual Finnish Christmas Bazaar is here again! The Finnish Hall on 24th November (10am-1pm) is THE place to get a little piece of Finland to take home and make your Christmas complete. From delicious foods and baked goods to crafts and other gift ideas there is something for everyone.

Items sell out quickly, so you may want to come in early to get your share of traditional Finnish treats – such as Karelian pasties, rye bread, cinnamon buns, casseroles, coffee, chocolate and sweets – or pop in a bit later to enjoy a less hectic cup of Christmas spirit, meeting friends and good coffee.

If we are nice, Santa Claus will pay a special visit so please bring a small present with your child’s name on it for Santa’s gift sack.
